Development and history of organ procurement organization in China

Organ transplantation has been the only effective method for the treatment of end-stage organ failure since its inception in China in the 1970 s. Since the 21 st century, an important reform of voluntary organ donation after the death of citizens has been carried out, which has guaranteed the healthy development of organ transplantation in China. The establishment of a scientific and standard organ procurement organization is the foundation stone of the rapid development of organ transplantation in China. Organ donation is affected by many factors such as traditional culture, ethics, legal system, economy, and society, and the establishment of the system is difficult. With the strong support of the State Council of China, the National Health Commission, and the Chinese Red Cross Society, China has initially established a fair, just, and transparent system for citizen organ donation and transplantation. Reviewing the development of organ procurement organization in China will be beneficial to explore the "Chinese model" of organ donation and transplantation, and promote standardizing and regularizing development of organ transplantation.
