Analysis of Audiometric Measurement in Pre-Elderly Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Based on HbA1c and Duration of Diabetes Mellitus
Hearing loss is a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Elevated HbA1c and duration of diabetes have been reported to affect audiometric findings in DM patients. This study aims to analyze audiograms in pre-elderly DM patients based on HbA1c levels and duration of diabetes. This study are cross-sectional study in Makassar from November 2024 to April 2025. Subjects were patients with DM aged 45-59 years who met the study criteria. Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) was performed on each subject. Data on HbA1c and duration of diabetes were collected. IBM SPSS version 26.0 was used for this data analysis. A total of 90 subjects met the study criteria with a mean age of 52.36±4.76 years. Duration of DM had highly significant association with the severity of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in both ears (p<0.0001 and <0.0001, respectively). HbA1c levels showed no significant correlation with the severity of SNHL in either ear (p=0.572 and 0.688, respectively). In conclusion, a longer duration of DM can increase the degree of SNHL.
